The hot new app which wants you to be money savvy when drunk
We have all been there before….using your credit card after one too many beverages at your local nightclub and cringing at your bank balance the morning after. However, this new app is looking to change the status quo and wants to help binge drinking Brits from blowing their monthly salary in one evening. Meet DrnkPay - the app which links to your credit and debit card, whilst watches you closer than Big Brother for the evening. It knows exactly how much you have drunk and limits certain purchases if you are struggling to walk in a straight line.
How does it do this? Well, before you put on your dancing shoes for the big night out, users connect the cards they desire to DrnkPay and select how many drinks they wish to consume for the evening. Wack your tech savvy wristband on and you are ready to go - this clever fashion accessory measures alcohol diffusion in the skin, monitoring how close you are to your 'personal limit'. The alternative is blowing into a bluetooth connectable breathalyser before every cocktail to ensure you don't break the bank.
All cards are blocked for a solid 12 hours, unless the user is under their pre-defined alcohol limit. If this is the case, the relevant debit and credit cards are activated and payments can be made. Interestingly, it's not just alcohol related purchases which you can select to block - you can even include online shopping and booking flights abroad! What’s cool here is, if all of your cards are blocked as you haven't kept your promise, DrnkPay's ‘help me out' feature allows you to order an Uber so you can get home safe and sound.
The app has been developed by a consultancy called iBe TSE. They decided to launch after data revealed around 50% of UK millennials admitted they regretted a purchase made when drunk. The aim is to help you curb impulsive spending in your darkest hours, during which text messages to ex-girlfriends, takeaway pizza and leaving your iPhone in the back of an Uber are the norm.
In theory, the app sounds like a great tool for managing your nightclub spend, however, in practice there are a few obstacles. As iBe TSE recognise, the app is not meant for those with zero willpower on a night out - for once the aim is to not try and beat the system! Nonetheless, we all struggle with intraday spending when sober let alone after a few drinks. I love the fact that this app is trying to limit damaging behaviour to both your liver and wallet! According to their website, they are currently speaking to a number of banks and card providers about rolling the technology out to their customers in the next 12 months.
